Core Application Areas
1. Food Industry: Flavoring and Preservation
Spice additives: Utilizing its natural butter flavor, it is used to blend essences for cream, cheese, ice cream, etc. (FEMA No. 2221). China's GB2760 permits its use with a maximum usage level of 0.15g/kg (for cold drinks).
Preservatives: Inhibiting mold and bacterial growth by lowering food pH values; used in pickles and animal feed silage (combined with propionic acid to enhance efficacy).
2. Chemical Industry: Synthetic Intermediates
Ester preparation: Esterification with methanol, ethanol, glycerol, etc. to generate butyrate esters, such as: Ethyl butyrate (fruit flavoring, used in beverages and candy);
Tributyrin (feed additive, improving animal intestinal health);
Butyl cellulose (plasticizer for coatings and adhesives).
Polymer monomers: Polymerization with glycols to generate polyesters (used for biodegradable materials), or used as a comonomer to synthesize acrylate resins (improving water resistance).
3. Pharmaceuticals and Health
Butyrate drugs: Sodium butyrate (n-butyl sodium butyrate) acts as a histone deacetylase inhibitor, used to treat ulcerative colitis (regulating gut flora, inhibiting inflammation), and also used in cancer research (inducing cancer cell apoptosis).
Skin care: Low concentration (0.5%-2%) n-butyl acid is used in stratum corneum regulation products to promote skin metabolism (similar to the effects of fruit acids).
4. Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
Feed additives: Sodium butyrate (or tributyrin) acts as an intestinal prebiotic, promoting the development of intestinal mucosa in piglets and broilers, and improving feed conversion rates (addition amount 0.1%-0.3%);
Plant growth regulators: Low concentration n-butyl acid can promote crop rooting and fruit maturation.
5. Other Applications
Textile industry: Used for wool degreasing and dyeing auxiliaries;
Organic synthesis: Used as a raw material for preparing compounds such as butyronitrile and butylamine;
Environmental protection: Used to treat nitrogen-containing wastewater, reducing ammonia nitrogen concentration through microbial conversion.
